TSX posts triple-digit decline, loonie lower

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index posted a triple-digit decline in late-morning trading, weighed down by the broad-based decline led by the energy, industrial and technology sectors.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 253.04 points at 15,601.01.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 309.73 points at 26,120.84. The S&P 500 index was down 31.96 points at 2,848.38, while the Nasdaq composite was down 129.28 points at 7,608.74.

The Canadian dollar traded lower at 76.99 cents US compared with an average of 77.13 cents US on Tuesday.

The November crude contract was down US$1.54 at US$73.42 per barrel and the November natural gas contract was up 2.6 cents at US$3.29 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was down 80 cents at US$1,190.70 an ounce and the December copper contract was down 1.45 cents at US$2.79 a pound.
