Stocks struggle for direction as earnings season gets into gear

Stocks started the week stymied for direction Monday as first-quarter earnings season picks up steam. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.29% rose less than a point to 2,908.20, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.25% was off 8 points, or less than 0.1%, to 2,604 . The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.49% rose 5 points, or 0.1%, to 7,989. Shares of Dow component Goldman Sachs GS, -3.07% fell 1.5%, weighing on the blue-chip index, after the investment bank reported its first revenue miss in two years.
