Stocks higher at the open, on track for second day of gains U.S. stocks jumped at the open Tuesday, buoyed by continued optimism over a COVID-19 vaccine and positive economic news from China. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.00% rose about 187 points or 0.7%, to start trading near 28,180, while the S&P 500 SPX, +0.52% was near 3,412, up 28 points or 0.8%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +1.20% jumped 1.2%, 128 points, to open near 11,186. China’s National Bureau of Statistics said retail sales were higher compared to a year ago in August, returning to annual growth for the first time in 2020. Meanwhile, shares of drugmaker BioNTech SE BNTX, -0.83% were higher Tuesday after it announced funding from the German government for the accelerated development of a coronvirus vaccine, extending a string of promising vaccine news over the past few days. Investors were also watching for new product news from Apple Inc. AAPL, +0.16%. Shares were 2.6% higher after the bell.
