Stocks end higher ahead of high-level U.S.-China trade talks

Stocks ended higher Wednesday after a news report said China was open to a partial deal when top U.S. and Chinese negotiators meet. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.70% rose around 182 points, or 0.7%, to end near 26,346, according to preliminary data, while the S&P 500 SPX, +0.91% advanced around 26 points, or 0.9%, to end near 2,919. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.02% ended near 7,904, up around 80 points, or 1%. U.S. and Chinese representatives are due to meet Thursday in Washington, with Bloomberg News reporting that China was open to a limited deal with the U.S. Stocks trimmed gains just ahead of the closing bell, however, after Reuters reported that Chinese officials had lowered expectations for progress in the talks following the U.S. decision this week to blacklist several Chinese tech companies.
