North American stocks slide, loonie down

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index posted a triple-digit decline in late-morning trading, continuing its fall after dropping more than 300 points on Wednesday.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 117.86 points at 15,399.54.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 146.35 points at 25,452.39 after dropping more than 800 points a day ago. The S&P 500 index was down 16.59 points at 2,769.09, while the Nasdaq composite was down 15.44 points at 7,406.61.

The Canadian dollar traded lower at 76.54 cents US compared with an average of 76.97 cents US on Wednesday.

The November crude contract was down US$1.49 at US$71.68 per barrel and the November natural gas contract was down 7.5 cents at US$3.21 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up US$26.30 at US$1,219.70 an ounce and the December copper contract was up 2.10 cents at US$2.80 a pound.
