Benchmark indices were trading higher in early morning session on Friday, with Sensex and Nifty reclaiming the crucial 40,000 and 12,000 marks, respectively, and the Nifty Bank index hitting a new all-time high.
The S&P BSE Sensex rose 236 points, or 0.6 per cent, to trade at 40,068 levels, with Asian Paints, Coal India, TCS, Larsen & Toubro, and IndusInd Bank clocking the highest gains. The broader Nifty50 index surged 73 points, or 0.6 per cent, to trade around 12,018 levels.
Among Nifty sectoral indices, only Nifty Realty index was trading in the red with marginal cuts. Nifty PSU Bank was the highest gainer among sectoral indices, up over 1 per cent. Meanwhile, Nifty Bank hit a new all-time high of 31,772.30 in the early morning session.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index gained 76 points, or 0.5 per cent, to hover around15,138 levels, while the S&P BSE SmallCap index was ruling at 15,004, up 40 points, or 0.27 per cent.
Shares of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) hit a 52-week high of Rs 330, up 4 per cent, after surging 20 per cent in two weeks on the BSE, lifted by strong earnings in March quarter (Q4FY19) and fall in crude oil prices.
