Apple announces new WatchOS 5 operating system with yoga tracking, competitions, easier Siri access

Apple Inc. AAPL, +0.95% discussed the features that will be a part of its new WatchOS 5 operating system for Apple Watch users. The Apple Watch will soon be able to track yoga and hiking workouts, and it will automatically detect when it think you’ve started a workout so you can get credit for the activity you do. The detection feature is something that Fitbit Inc. FIT, +4.08% also has on its smartwatches. You’ll also be able to start weekly competitions with friends and track the standings. The Watch will have a new walkie-talkie feature that lets users communicate from their wrists. Siri shortcuts will be available on the watch as well as on the iPhone, and users will be able to engage Siri on their watches by just raising their wrists and talking. Previously, users had to say “Hey Siri” before a command. More notifications will be interactive, so you’ll be able to pay for a ride or extend a dinner reservation from your wrist. The WatchOS 5 software will let users view web content through the mail and email apps, and it will also support podcasts. Apple shares are up 0.8% in Monday trading, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.70% has gained 0.7%.
